Fiji has one resort with true overwater bures, which surprises almost everyone, and the rest of the South Pacific supply is spread thinly across the Cook Islands, Vanuatu, Samoa and New Caledonia. That scarcity is the story here. Likuliku in the Mamanucas is the Fijian answer, Aitutaki's lagoon in the Cooks is the one people compare with Bora Bora, and Vanuatu and New Caledonia have older, cheaper bungalows over calmer water. We are strict about what counts, because several resorts in the region market a beachfront bure as overwater. Rates sit below Polynesia, and flights from Australia and New Zealand are short, which is most of the reason to come.
